It wasn’t pretty, but the Packers prevailed Sunday 24-15 over the Jaguars. With the win the Packers are now 5-3 on the season while the Jags fall to 1-6. It is the 3rd consecutive victory for the Pack. I thought it would be no contest today and boy was I wrong. The Jags didn’t allow Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay offense to get in rhythm at all. Yes many players were out of the game due to injuries, but it should be no excuse.
With Greg Jennings and Jordy Nelson out of the game, Rodgers turned to James Jones and Randall Cobb most of the game just as expected. The numbers weren’t as great as I had thought they would be, but they got the job done. Alex Green was a workhorse with his 22 carries, however he ran for just 54 yards. 2.5 YPC isn’t going to cut it from here on out. The Packers have to find a way to run the ball more effectively.
The Packers led 14-12 at halftime thanks in large part due to their special teams. Mid-way through the 2nd quarter the Packers blocked Bryan Anger’s punt and a few crazy bounces later Desman Moses jumped on it in the end-zone for the TD. The Jags got their only TD in the 2nd quarter before halftime after a fumble by Aaron Rodgers. Blaine Gabbert found one of the best names in the NFL Guy Whimper for a 1 yard TD.
Both offenses struggled to finish drives in the 3rd quarter and the credit goes to the defenses. Early in the 4th quarter Aaron Rodgers found Donald Driver for a 4 yard TD to cap off a 7 play 52 yard drive. That put the Packers up 21-12, but Gabbert brought his team down the field and Josh Scobee made a 32 yard FG to bring the Jags to within 6 points. The Jags would get the ball back and take it to the Green Bay 44 yard line before giving it back on downs.
Green Bay drove down the field and Mason Crosby sealed it up with a 25 yard FG to make up for a miss earlier in the game. The key play was a pass interference call on 3rd and 7 that gave the Pack 38 yards.
Aaron Rodgers finished his day 22-35, for 186 yards and 2 TD’s. Well below his standards, but good enough to get it done. Jones hauled in 7 catches for 78 yards and Cobb caught 5 passes for 28 yards and a TD. The Jaguars actually outgained the Packers by 103 yards, but it wasn’t enough.
Green Bay will host Arizona next week before their bye week. It will be another important game as they need to keep pace with the Bears who kept on winning today in dramatic fashion. While it wasn’t a pretty win today, a win is a win in this league and I’ll take it. GO PACK GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
